Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center
View Exotic Orphaned & Injured Roatan Wildlife
At Maya Key, the Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is an ongoing conservation project that takes in orphaned, injured, confiscated or donated wildlife. The animals brought to this location are rehabilitated and released back into its native habitat whenever possible. The center is headed by a U.S. board certified veterinarian who is a graduate of one of the top U.S. veterinary schools.
Visitors to Maya Key have the opportunity to see these animals in enclosures that were designed to lower the stress levels of the animals, while offering a great viewing experience to visitors. The exhibits mimic natural habitats as much as possible, and built with specialized mesh that offers excellent visibility, while maintaining maximum containment. There will be occasional opportunities for visitors to get up close and personal with many of the animals during one-on-one structured encounters.
The geographic location of Honduras allows it to have one of the most diverse and rich wildlife habitats in the western hemisphere, which makes it attractive to poachers who take these animals out of there natural habitat to be sold on the black market. Our rescue center is the only one in its class in the entire country with the purpose of minimizing the loss of exotic animals.
The animals each have individualized diets designed by wildlife dieticians and the animal care staff provide daily enrichment activities for animals to prevent boredom. The staff are reviewed bi-annually by wildlife veterinary specialists from various U.S. Institutions.
